UMass’ McMahon named Italian national team coach

The Italian Lacrosse Association has named UMass women’s lacrosse head coach Angela McMahon as head coach of the first-ever Italian national team, which will compete in the 2017 FIL World Cup in Guildford, England.

Justin Serpone, who is McMahon’s husband and the head men’s soccer coach at Amherst College, will serve as co-head coach of the team.

McMahon, who will continue to serve as head coach for UMass, is tasked with building the Italian national team over the next two years as it prepares for its first world championship event. The first test for the squad will be the 2015 European Championship with a host site still to be determined.

Rowing team takes first place at Derby Sweeps

The Northampton Community Rowing Master Women’s 4+ took first place at the Derby Sweeps and Sculls Regatta in Shelton, Connecticut, on June 7.

The team consisted of Linda Hannum, Toria Brett, Carol MacColl, Anita Fabos and coxswain Em Boo.

19th annual Greater Hatfield Open July 20

The 19th annual Greater Hatfield Open will be held July 20 at The Country Club of Greenfield.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Smith Academy golf team.

Fee is $70 per player and includes greens fees, carts, prizes and dinner. Sponsorships of tees and greens are available for $50 each.

The four-person or five-person scramble will start at 1 p.m.

Registration open for Fourth of July 5K

The Greater Springfield Harriers will hold the 37th annual Fourth of July 5K Road Race on July 4.

The race will start at 9 a.m. at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, 1000 Columbus Ave., Springfield.

Preregistration is available at www.harriers.org or at Fast Feet Inc., 231 Elm Street, West Springfield, or Fast Feet Inc., 24 Elm Street, Westfield.

Preregistration fee is $18. Day of race fee is $25 and available until 8:30 a.m.

Bethlehem Chapter offering Yankees bus trip

The Bethlehem Chapter No. 24 Order of the Eastern Star will hold its annual “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” Yankee Stadium Baseball Trip on July 19.

The price for the 1:05 p.m. game between the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds and the bus fare is $120. Seats are at field level section 108.

The bus will depart Sheldon Field in Northampton at 8 a.m. and Denny’s Restaurant in Holyoke at 8:30 a.m.

Payment in full is required with reservation.

Amherst ultimate leagues accepting players

Registration is now open for the Sumer Ultimate League of Amherst (SULA).

Games are played at Plum Brook Field. The youth league plays Tuesday nights from June 24 through Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. There are three divisions: Frisbee Activities for Kids (ages 7-8), Elementary (ages 9-11) and Middle School (ages 12-13). Women’s division plays on Mondays from June 16 to Aug. 4. Recreational division plays on Thursdays from June 19 to Aug. 7 and the competitive division plays Wednesdays from June 18 to Aug. 6.

League is open to residents of all abilities. Youth fee is $39 for the season. Adult fee is $45. To register, visit lsse.org or call LSSE at 259-3065.

Hamp Recreation offering youth soccer program

The Northampton Recreation Department is offering a Parent & Child Pre-K and Youth Soccer Program for kids in preschool, kindergarten and first and second grade on Saturday mornings at Look Park.

The seven-week program starts Sept. 6 and runs through Oct. 25. The preschool and kindergarten divisions are coed, the first/second grade division is separate boys and girls. Register by July 19 to receive the early registration discount. Registration deadline is Aug. 22 or until filled.

Hamp Recreation offering Red Sox bus trip

The Northampton Recreation Department will be traveling to Boston on July 20 to see the Red Sox take on the Kansas City Royals.

The bus will depart JFK Middle School at 9:30 a.m. for the 1:35 p.m. game and we will return to JFK Middle School at the conclusion of the game.

The price per person is $113 (non-residents add $5), which includes motor coach transportation and game ticket in Infield Grandstand, Section 11.
